As civil rulers, not having their duty to the people duly before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as the military forces which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the article in their right to keep and bear their private arms. TENCH COXE in Remarks on the First Part of the Amendments to the Federal Constitution, under the pseudonym A Pennsylvanian in the Philadelphia Federal Gazette, June 18, 1789.

Sean, Hopefully, this blog would provide a forum for some interesting an creative discussion. The future of geospatial web is being written as we speak and, like you,I am very optimistic about it too. Good luck.

Sean, I am really interested in your work in this area. I agree we need more analyitic GIS capabilities in the consumer-level versions of these global map applications. As processors continue to get more powerful, I'm guessing the ability for the type of number crunching required to do this sort of thing will become more realistic for browser-based applications. Of course Google Earth is not browser based, and they do have a profit plan for the product-- still, I really want to see more along the lines of GIS in Google Earth. I'll look forward to more posts from you on this! :-)

The point I was trying to make, apparently not successfully, is that geospatial web applications need to evolve past push pins because trying to put traditional GIS on the web is going to fail. Actually I am very optimistic about the future of the geospatial web - especially since it is how we spend most of our hours during the week.

You pointed out a great example where current push pin maps come up short - trying to show houses and crime rate (you get a chia pet of different colored push pins). You are correct the user does not need to know the staisical relationship between crime and housing or how kernel density makes better popcorn. The user does need to know if location "A" is a better choice than location "B", and that is is awfully hard to do with a bunch of push pins.

In addition to the Google Earth API, craigs list data, and crime data you also need a third API to provide the analytics and visualize the answer to the user. That is what we are working on and should have some screen shots to show shortly and the beta not too long after. We promise that it will not require an understanding of kernels or Orville Reddenbacher to use it.
