The poverty and demographic maps the Tutor/Mentor Connection is using to help people see where to allocate funds to at-risk youth and poverty and to locate existing community assets are really compelling. I'd encourage folks to check them out at http://webpages.charter.net/jcory17/geotech/pic_lib/census2k/pic_lib.htm

The objective of GeoCommons is to help people find and share data, analyze it using simple geo-analytical tools, and connect with others who are working on the same issues or geographies. It's not public yet, but we're eager to let some people try it out and help us work out any kinks.

I'll check out your blog, Dan, and introduce myself and GeoCommons to the GIS discussion group you pointed me to -- thanks a lot!

I'm interested in learning more about what this GeoCommons is. I've been trying to harness GIS technology for more than 10 years, in an effort to draw volunteer and philanthropic resources into poverty areas of Chicago, where they would be used in tutor/mentor programs that help kids move through school and into careers.

In the Program Locator at http://www.tutormentorconnection.org you can see poverty maps, and locations of poorly performing schools (indicators of need) and search a database for known tutoring and/or mentoring programs. The results display on a Google map.

We're doing this with volunteers and we're looking for institutional partners who might value this as a teaching tool, or see this as a tool to draw resources into the poverty neighborhoods of their own communities.

I write about this on my http://tutormentor.blogspot.com blog. Please introduce yourself, or point me to the GeoCommons so we can connect there.
