US – Russian Stand off over Nuclear Missles
The Australian newspaper “The Age” lead with “Putin threatens to point missiles at Europe“. Several other international media outlets have led with less dire stories concerning a face off at the G8 summit between the USA and Russia. At the core of the debate is a plan by the US to place a missile shield over Eastern Europe and the Russians responding strongly that this will tip the military balance of power in the region. Heavy rhetoric ensues along with sensationalist headlines. While the story has been well spun it is a bit scary to see the large number of ballistic missile launch sites in Russia. If ever there was a reason to ensure stability in the region this is it.
