The data team at Geocommons has been adding international demographics datasets to Finder! like crazy. We hope that you will find these data sets useful in putting together maps with your own data because, to be honest, slogging through census data is turning us into gnomes.

The Brazillian census is so impressive that it deserves a wider audience. Check out a few of the data sets available on finder by searching for Brazil. Compare the detail of the brazillian census boundaries for data like Average Household Income when compared with US Census tract-level boundaries for similar data.

The US Census does report their data at one further level of detail (blocks), except for all the information in its Summary File 3 data set, which includes average household income. When it comes to data like this, the Brazillian data seems to clearly win out.

The Brazillian data also includes different kinds of information than the US census, such as counts of improvised housing (as opposed to permanent). The map below exhibits the same pairing of the richest regions with concentrations of improvised housing that are by now familiar.

You may have to click on the image to see the most detail. For comparison, the data in the map above is in US dollars. And below, a map of New York income:

If Brazil data interests you, check back, because we will be adding more data in the coming weeks.

One Response to Dataset of the Day: Sao Paulo & NYC, Barrios & Tracts

  1. P and H tables from Summary File 3 are available at the sub-tract block group level, while PCT and HCT tables are available only at the tract level.
