Dataset of the Day: Madoff Clients Map
Is seems the thing to do around the internet these days is create a map of Madoff Clients. Isn’t it nice that Bernie has provided us with such a great use for geography! Of course we had to do a map ourselves since everyone else is! Our dataset has the clients aggregated to zipcode for the US and to city for international clients.
Below is a map of the world, a map of US Clients, and a map of European clients. The size of the points represents the number of clients in that area.
Check out the dataset in Finder! and play around with the map in Maker!. Maybe you can create your own map in Maker! using this dataset (or another Madoff dataset) and add some other layers.
Here are some other maps folks have made: The New York Times has made a US map as well as this site called Madoffmap.com and this one.
Well, enjoy our map and the many others!

The cleanest and most functional Madoff dataset was published by USLaw.com at:

Seriously….you are selling the Madoff list???
I guess there is a sucker born every minute.
USLaw, Really?!?
you don’t even have the international Madoff Clients, award you no points and may god have mercy on your soul.
Those international geocoders are expensive and really cut into the profit margin.

Do you have a way to control for population density in your software? For instance, the Madoff map of the US is just confirms that there are a lot of wealthy investors in major cities. But that correlation, the one between population density and Madoff clients, does not appear as strong in Europe, and that seems like a useful observation for assessing the impact of his fraud. Being able to isolate the anomalies may make for a stronger system.
Thanks Malone for the comment. Yes our software can normalize by population or population density. Once you make a map, in the layer box on the upper right of the page, there is an option to standardize you data by any other attribute in the dataset.
The currently Madoff dataset does not have an attribute for population but it would be fairly easy to do. You would just need to add a column for population or population density in the CSV, which you can download from Finder! The population would have to be by zip for the US and by city for the international places.
Its a very good suggestion to show the Madoff clients controlled by population and it would also compensate for the fact that the scales for US and international are different.
It would also be interesting to show the Madoff dataset on a map with another layer showing income to see the correlation between wealth populations.
You are welcome to give it a try and we will work on creating a Madoff dataset with population as an attribute as well.
Thanks again,
Emily
Nice work, Sean!
Thanks Dan – although it was the data team not me. I just send email and make ppt’s. How is Boston treating you?
