Anyone from the DC Metro Area can tell you that we usually get our best snows during the end of February or in March. You know, right when you are starting to think spring is on its way! This year is no different! Today’s little snowstorm should be a real treat for all the kids (big and small) who have gone through a winter with little sledding potential up until now.

So with the day off and a nice fluffy-white carpet outside, kids and grownups can grab their sleds, trash can lids, or plastic bags and head for the hills.

To help, we created a dataset of sledding sites in and around the DC Metro Area. There is even a place to go Dog Sledding! Of course many of these hills are hearsay so remember, no trespassing and be very very careful. Suicide Hill (one of the hills in Baltimore) has that name for a reason!

You can view the map below, with all of the sites in DC, Maryland and Virginia by clicking here or on the map.

In this map, you can see where I used to go to sled as a teenager in Baltimore… Cow Hill. The location may not be exact as I am going off of my memory and the site may not even be there anymore.

If you live in the area, check out this map to find the nearest sledding grounds near you. If you know of a great sledding hill that is not on the map, post a comment with the location and I will add it to the dataset. If you live somewhere else, then why not upload your own dataset to Finder! of your favorite sledding spots.

Happy Sledding!!

This is the best application of GIS I’ve seen in years.
